REPORTER: UNFORTUNATELY PALO ALTO SAW A NEARLY 70 PERCENT INCREASE IN CAR BREAK-INS FROM JANUARY TO NOVEMBER OF LAST YEAR COMPARED TO THE YEAR BEFORE, AND 2020'S NUMBERS AREN'T OFF TO A GREAT START THEY'RE JUST GRABBING WHAT THEY SEE INSIDE AND TAKE OFF REPORTER: BUT IN THIS CASE THE LAW CAUGHT UP TO THESE TEEN SUSPECTS AND 2 MINORS ACCUSED OF SMASHING WINDOWS MONDAY MORNING AND STEALING WHAT THEY COULD FIND INSIDE CARS WE HAD SOMEBODY CALL 911 BECAUSE THEY SAW A GROUP OF MALE SUBJECTS BANGING ON CAR WINDOWS REPORTER: PALO ALTO POLICE SPOTTED THE SUSPECTS NEAR AMARILLO AVENUE AND WEST BAY SHORE ROAD WHEN THEY ALLEGEDLY BROKE INTO 8 CARS

TONIGHT SHATTERED GLASS STILL REMAINS ON THE STREET SO RIGHT NOW DETECTIVES ARE LOOKING INTO THE POSSIBILITY TO SEE IF THESE SAME SUSPECTS ARE RELATED TO OTHER BURGLARIES IN THE CITY REPORTER: FROM JANUARY TO NOVEMBER LAST YEAR IN PALO ALTO THERE WERE 816 CAR BURGLARIES IN 2018 THERE WERE 485 THERE'S A 68 PERCENT INCREASE, BUT THAT'S NOT COUNTING THE BREAK-INS DURING THE LAST FEW DAYS OF THE YEAR

BETWEEN CHRISTMAS EVE AND JANUARY 2nd, THERE WERE 44 THEY'RE SO BRAZEN REPORTER: MANY OF THE BREAK-INS HAPPEN ALONG UNIVERSITY AVENUE IN DOWNTOWN AND STANFORD'S OPEN MALL I DON'T FEEL SAFE LEAVING MY CAR, EVEN IN HIGHLY POPULATED AREAS WHERE THERE'S A LOT OF TRAFFIC I LOOK IT ALL THE TIME, BUT I STILL JUST DON'T HAVE A SENSE OF SAFETY

REPORTER: POLICE SAY THE 5 TEENS FROM MONDAY'S CASE WHO RANGE FROM 17 TO 19 YEARS OLD WERE IN AND OUT OF CARS WITHIN SECONDS THERE WERE BURGLARY TOOLS, 2 WINDOW PUNCHES AS WELL AS GLOVES IN THE CAR ONE ALSO HAD A SKI MASK REPORTER: AND THE SUSPECTS ARE SCHEDULED IN COURT
